Creativity + Technology: Art and AI Hackathon

The Art and AI Hackathon, a collaborative effort by the Google Developer Student Club Tilburg University and AI Forward Forum, took place on May 11, 2023. The event unfolded within the innovative confines of the MindLabs building, nestled in Tilburg’s Spoorzone. With a focus on engaging a broad student audience, the hackathon brought together nine teams of talented individuals, each eager to combine their creative prowess with the potential of artificial intelligence. Students from different study programs at Tilburg University participated, including Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation, and International Business Administration.

The day commenced with a keynote presentation by Dr. Martin Skrodzki, Assistant Professor at TU Delft in the Computer Graphics and Visualization group. With his expertise and insights, Dr. Skrodzki set the stage for a day of exploration and collaboration.

Participants then immersed themselves in a workshop, exploring the potential of generative AI tools to help bring their artistic visions to life. The workshop culminated with the revelation of the hacking session’s theme: “Progression of Time”.

The hacking session served as the heart of the hackathon, where participants utilized tools such as Midjourney and Runway to shape their ideas into unique art pieces. This hands-on experience enabled participants to blend their creativity with the capabilities of AI technology. Once the hacking session concluded, each team had the opportunity to pitch their art piece to a panel of judges from Tilburg University and Breda University of Applied Sciences. The goal was to explain the concept behind their art piece and share their creative process.

Following the pitches, participants engaged in a discussion session featuring photographer Tadas Černiauskas, also known as TadaoCern. The discussion explored various aspects of the artistic process, the essence of creativity, and the definition of a creator. Tadas Černiauskas, with his renowned artworks having made waves in Europe and North America, offered fresh insights and perspectives.

As the day neared its end, the hackathon culminated in an awards ceremony. Three exceptional art pieces were selected as winners by the panel of judges. These winners were celebrated and received monetary prizes, recognizing their ideas and ingenuity.
